Top 10 QB prospects of past 3 NFL draft classes: Darnold No. 1
(By Daniel Jeremiah
NFL Media analyst
Published: March 19, 2018 at 01:46 p.m. Updated: March 19, 2018 at 02:21 p.m
)

Editor's note: NFL.com analyst and former NFL scout Daniel Jeremiah of the Move The Sticks Podcast shares some of his scouting notes, including:

» A player projection for each of the 2018 NFL Draft picks that changed hands in a blockbuster weekend trade

But first, we kick off this week's notebook with Jeremiah's look at how this year's group of quarterback prospects stacks up against the top QB talents that have entered the league in the previous two drafts.

* * *

1) Sam Darnold, USC
Draft class: 2018
The skinny: I had very similar draft grades on each of the top four players on this list. However, I gave Darnold a slightly higher grade than Carson Wentz because of his durability and level of competition from college.

2) Carson Wentz, North Dakota State
Draft class: 2016; second overall pick, Philadelphia Eagles
The skinny: Wentz had an ideal skill set coming out of NDSU. His ability to drive the ball accurately and create with his legs made him a special prospect.

3) Josh Rosen, UCLA
Draft class: 2018
The skinny: Rosen is the best pure passer in this time frame (2016-2018). His motion, footwork and arm talent are off the charts.

4) Jared Goff, Cal
Draft class: 2016; first overall pick, Los Angeles Rams
The skinny: Goff was very smooth and accurate at Cal. He was an effortless thrower and you've seen that carry over to the NFL.

5) Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma
Draft class: 2018
The skinny: Mayfield is the shortest member of this group (measured in at 6-foot 5/8 and 215 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine), but I gave him a strong grade based on his touch, playmaking ability and toughness.

6) Josh Allen, Wyoming
Draft class: 2018
The skinny: Allen was an inconsistent performer at Wyoming, but his good moments are incredibly impressive. He is very capable of outplaying my draft grade.

7) Deshaun Watson, Clemson
Draft class: 2017; 12th overall pick, Houston Texans
The skinny: I had Watson as my highest-rated quarterback in last year's class, but based on early returns, I was way too low with my grade. I had concerns with his accuracy and decision making, but he cleaned up both areas last fall. He was off to a remarkable start as a rookie before suffering an ACL tear in November.

8) Mitchell Trubisky, North Carolina
Draft class: 2017; second overall pick, Chicago Bears
The skinny: I loved Trubisky's talent, but he had a very small sample size of production. He was a full-time starter for only one year at UNC, but his upside was tremendous.

9) DeShone Kizer, Notre Dame
Draft class: 2017; 52nd overall pick (Round 2), Cleveland Browns
The skinny: I had a big grade on Kizer heading into his final year at Notre Dame, but he struggled mightily to maintain that level of play. I ended up dropping his grade prior to the 2017 draft and he landed in a really tough spot in Cleveland. He was rushed into action before he was ready to play, and the results weren't pretty. Now, he's getting a fresh start after being traded to the Green Bay Packers earlier this month.

10) Paxton Lynch, Memphis
Draft class: 2016; 26th overall pick, Denver Broncos
The skinny: Lynch was a polarizing player coming out of Memphis. His size, arm talent and athleticism were enticing, but I had concerns about the adjustment he would have to make from his college offense to an NFL system.

“The New York Jets, when Brady retires in two years – will have the quarterback who was No. 1 on virtually every other board not named Cleveland. Of my eight contacts that I use regularly in this league – head coaches, GMs, regional scouting directors – Darnold was No. 1 on every board. He was not a flawless prospect, but he is such a perfect fit for the New York Jets.”

I polled 24 teams and asked them who was their #1 rated QB - 17 teams had Sam Darnold number #1. Darnold was rated the highest QB coming into this season. @NFLDraft @nyjets @nflnetwork

The fact that this mook has Watson ranked under all 4 of the first rounders this year after seeing what he could do with his arm last year and Lamar Jackson isn't on the list is all of the proof that I need to know this guy was simply cashing in on hype for clicks. Wentz under Darnold is simply hilarious, but Goff under Rosen is just an unbelievable treat. Seriously...Watson under Allen...Come on, man.

I wish that I had the time to go back over all of the draft analysis from these guys over the years to show just how consistently wrong they are about quarterbacks. I mean, you can't expect them to always be right, and sure, some guys come out of left field, but the sheer quantity of QB hype that they toss around for undeserving passers is comical. They're part of a business that cashes checks off of excitement and crapshoot odds, so I take everything they say with a grain of salt. They've been trying to find the next 'Class of '83' since about 1984, and they've swung and missed every single time.

And if he is half the passer he's hyped to be, the guy BETTER be shredding Miami's secondary. Although our safety game just got a good bit more impressive, and I think Xavien Howard is going to be a decent CB.

Its safe to say that Goff and Trubisky should be at the top of the list since they are proven?

And I'll go ahead and say that I don't hate Darnold. Like I said previously, I think that he could be a good starter in the league, but he's going to need talent around him. I would have been much happier if the Jets had taken Allen and Darnold had gone to the talent abyss that is Buffalo, but you can't win them all...

I like Daniel Jeremiah and think he's actually one of the better hacks and has the credentials as well.
Of course the draft is a craps shoot and the %s outside of the first round is likely that a player will bust.
I'll be honest I didn't know a whole lot about Darnold as it was a 'given' that the Browns would pick him, so did more homework on all the other top QB picks and for that matter couldn't understand what made darnold stick out as being the consensus #1 pick. But know after seeing him in TC and hearing him in pressers think he is ideal for us and the NY media.
Whilst on paper we don't have a SB calibre team (yet) we still do have good players that will help him out. We are LOADED at WR and outside of Anderson, Enunwa , Kearse and Pryor look to maybe have some other young prospects.
Jeremy Bates has also gone mental with TEs which are invaluable to rookie QBs, interestingly we also signed UDFA Dmitri Flowers, who if he can build the same rapport as he did with Mayfield.
Back to the list, its subjective and you're right maybe some should be higher/lower but when I read this pre-draft it got we quite hyped up, which is no bad thing.
I think that Darnold wins the job from McCown and will start Day 1 :)

Lol I'm not quoting that block again...

The track records of rookie QB's who start Day 1 and those who have at least half a season to sit and learn the NFL game are night and day.

If your Jimmy G or Aaron Rodgers... it made sense. With no disrespect to Josh, he'll learn far more starting.

I also think in most cases its better for rookie QBs to sit at least half a Season and learn. I think McCown is good, i would rank him just behind Tannehil. I also agree that Tannehil does just enough to Keep the Job but not enough to get the Team anywhere - unless the Team becomes realy good. You can view it as worse than a real bust at QB - because if he is a Ryan Leaf you just move on and get another Chance.

The Division is to me quite clear. Its NE to loose - until Bradys arm falls of. I dont see anybody who could compete with a fit Brady/Bellichek Combo. It will be interesting to see what happens when Brady cant Play anymore. My gues is that They will stil be good, just not very good and move on from the Coach after two years or so.

The other Teams just have too many holes to fil. The Jets are maybe the closest IF Darnold develops well. I think best case might be 8-8. I dont have much hope for Miami right now, i just dont see a lot of Players that are Special there. I think ceiling is 7-9. Same goes to Buffalo, i dont think the rookie is the awnswer this year. If Mccaron Plays really good maybe 6 wins? But i would guess it will be 5.

Other ones with bold predicitons for divisons :-)?

Miami has a bunch of guys who could do well with good coaching. The injury bug hosed them hard last year on offense, and the Ajayi trade is a head-scratcher that I still don't understand. Their line is still bad...bottom 10 at best...but I think this year will be a marked improvement over last. They were that bad. Kenyon Drake is good, but I'm worried that Gore will get far more playing time than a RB at his age should. Parker is good, and will be able to fully emerge now that Landry and Cutler are gone, and the rest of their WR corps is underrated. Gesicki is Aaron Hernandez without the murders, and I expect him to dominate in the Red Zone. Speaking of Cutler, they won 6 games with Mr. Apathy tossing the ball like a decline-phase Rex Grossman. If Tannehill stays healthy, they'll win at least 9. And I'm not a fan of Tanny. Their defense should be better if it can stay healthy, but CB and DT are still huge question marks. Second place should be a good dog fight between them and the Jets with neither making the playoffs, with Buffalo falling back to their familiar home in last. The Spawns of Satan take the division, of course.

The AFC North is going to be Pittsburgh. Cincy should keep second, but I expect Cleveland to be MUCH better this year with Hue Jackson not calling the plays. If Cleveland finished 8-8 and second in the division I would not be surprised. I think Baltimore still has a ways to go, and won't really contend until Flacco gets the boot next offseason.

The South is going to produce 2-3 playoff teams. Jacksonville is a shoe-in barring injury, and I think Houston will be right behind them under the same circumstances. The Titans have a floor of respectable and a ceiling of dark horse, and Indy will come in last regardless of Luck's health...but, with key players healthy, none of these teams should finish with fewer than 6 wins.

The AFC West can go one of 3000 ways. If Case wasn't a fluke in Minnesota, which is 50/50, Denver wins handily. Even if he was a pretender, I think the Broncs still win 8. The fate of the Chiefs rests with Mahomes...and Andy Reid's idiocy. I'd like Phillip Rivers to go out in a blaze of glory, but I think that he just gradually withers away into obscurity like my hero Dan Marino. The Raiders are going to look incredibly stupid with the Gruden hire, and Gruden is going to lose all of the coaching credibility he never deserved by week 10. I think the Raiders being a dumpster fire is the easiest call in the division, and if they aren't picking in the top 5 next draft it will be because Carr and Mack take the team onto their shoulders like they've never done before.

The NFC is boring and inferior.

The East goes Eagles, Cowboys, Giants, Redskins. The Eagles do not fall off, but are given more competition by both Dallas and New York. I think Eli and the Giants just miss the playoffs, and the Redskins completely fail at sports.

The North is taken by the Vikings, with the Packers taking the second Wild Card spot with Dallas. The Lions regress a bit, but still put up enough of a fight to have an outside shot at the playoffs. The Bears are better, but are picking in the latter half of the top 10 again.

The South turns into a true battleground. I think Brees and the Saints pull out one last year of magic and take the division in week 17, but are subsequently and brutally dumped in the first round. The Panthers are the odd team out of the NFC playoffs, with the Buccs coming in third after yet another total collapse by Atlanta.

The West is all Rams, with the 49ers coming in second but not nearly as strongly as many pundits would hope. The Seahawks collapse continues, and the Cardinals pick first in next year's draft. Fitzgerald probably isn't back after this season.
