Re: Roster Rules and Future Position Switching Restrictions

Creating a new thread for roster rules with an eye toward when position switches move in with the new UI. More on that below.

Current Rules

1. All teams should have starters with players listed at the following positions and as close to default weight for position as possible. Minimum caps are listed in parentheses.

QB
RB1, RB2 (210)
FB1 (235)
WR
TE1, TE2 (245)
OL

DE1, DE2 (260)
DT1, DT2 (290)
SLB
MLB
WLB
CB
SS
FS

2. No LBs are allowed to play DE.
3. DE can back up DT, but teams should must carry the minimum minimum number of starters at weight.
4. Backup LBs can all be WLBs as long as you have starters at position.
5. Backup DBs can all be CBs as long as you have starters at position.

Coming with the new UI

When the new UI is implemented for everyone, I will be using the new admin position switch tools. If you want to get used to this, you can switch to the new UI right now to see what it looks like.

1. Players will only be able to switch to a position that has a lighter natural weight, but players will not be able to switch from a position that has a lighter natural weight to a position with a heavier natural weight with two key exceptions.

This ends up looking like this where the angle bracket shows the ability to switch positions:

Offense

OL <> OL
C < TE > FB > RB > WR
FB > RB > WR
RB > WR
WR

QB > RB

Exception 1: TEs can play at Center (long snapping) and change positions to Center. Once changed to Center, though, they can only stay at OL and never change back to TE.

Note that if you move a player to WR, that's the only position they can play at from that point forward. That means RBs will become more valuable in the backfield and as a flex to receiver.

QBs often flex to RB, we'll keep that. But they can't return kicks anymore. If you move a QB to RB though, that's their position for good.

Defense

DT <> DE > LB
LB > S > CB
SS <> FS > CB
CB

Exception 2: All DL are treated equal and all safeties are treated equal in terms of position switching and roster placement. Once a player is moved from DE to LB, though, he's staying there and not moving back to DE. (No more veteran meta moves from LB to DE for camp.)

Safeties are also about the same weight so there is no reason to disallow letting them swap spots. However, once a DB is made a CB, he's a CB.

Special Teams

KR and PR can be a RB, WR, or DB. No more metagaming the return game until it's fixed.

Since we are staying with the old UI for the current 2042 season, are we allowed to use the league's previous rules, e.g., using a RB instead of a FB in certain two-back formations? If so, can you list those rules for reference?

Flex Rules

1. WRs can be substituted for a running back for the following formations: 104 all plays, 113 Shotgun, 203 Shotgun, 203 Split Backs. The reason why is that the running plays out of these formations are fairly limited and the RB1 often gets targeted as a top target in these formations. This will means WRs will some times end up with running yards, but these should be fair inconsequential. If players figure out how to abuse this rule in the running game, I'll pull it.

2. WRs can be substituted for TEs for the following formations: 014 all plays. The TE routes should be more effective than they are. TEs are still often overmanned in these formations because coverage still largely depends on speed.

3. RBs and FBs can be swapped to take advantage of the FB designed runs like the 212 Weak I FB Inside Weak. You can also run 2 RBs in the 212 Split Backs and 203 Split Backs (this seemed fairly obvious because you can put a receiver here, but clarifying).

4. This one seems obvious, but I forgot to call it out. FB can flex to TE3.

So am I to gather then that changing a players pos (ie player is RB, you change him to FB, not assign him FB role in an override) that's it - you can only change pos once?

When is the new UI the only one available?

You can only change from heavier to lighter positions except moving a TE to Center. So you can move a FB to RB but not the other way and you cannot play a RB at FB in the new UI.

Not sure when it's the only one.

Just an idea I have, but I’ll throw it out there and I’m sure it’ll generate a response either condemning it or perhaps it may be considered, but here it is!

I very much like this amendment towards positional changes! BUT, and this is my idea (most likely will be up for debate), every season the amendment towards positional changes should be in effect from regular season, midweek one till the end of season.
And from the start of free agency (1) till the last game of preseason I believe during this so-called grace. Every team owner can do whatever they wish to their roster in terms of position changes (that would mean the rule towards position changes will not be in effect during this grace period).

I like this amendment, but I'm likely to forget to change it without constant reminders.

The other problem is that this allows for the CB > DE move.

New UI will be the default soon. So get ready if it switches mid season. https://nfl.myfootballnow.com/community/1/7827?page=1#47513
