The New England Patriots opened their 2047 preseason with a 32-16 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home on August 10. Under the guidance of head coach Charles Reed, the Patriots secured a convincing win in their first preseason test.

The scoring began early as Patriots kicker John Reynolds connected on a 32-yard field goal with 11:17 left in the first quarter to put the hosts up 3-0. The defense responded quickly, with a key interception by Kevin Adams setting the tone. Patriots running back Samuel Moon then punched in the first touchdown, running seven yards into the end zone at 7:27, followed by a Reynolds extra point to make it 10-0.

The Buccaneers responded late in the first quarter with a 36-yard field goal from Victor Shand narrowing the deficit to 10-3. The Patriots extended their lead in the second quarter when quarterback Fred Matthews found Brian Rafferty for an eight-yard touchdown pass, making the score 17-3 following another Reynolds extra point.

Victor Shand added another field goal for Tampa Bay, a 35-yarder, before halftime to bring the score to 17-6. Patriots kicker Reynolds added a 22-yard field goal late in the half, giving New England a 20-6 cushion.

The Buccaneers kept fighting and opened the second half with a 38-yard touchdown pass from Roy Mahar to Michael Watson, cutting the lead to 20-13 after Shand's extra point. However, turnovers derailed the Tampa Bay offense, including a forced fumble by Dwight Freeney and an interception by Eugenio Pinnock in the third quarter.

New England sealed the victory in the closing moments of the third quarter with a 52-yard field goal from Reynolds. The Patriots’ special teams and defense played pivotal roles, combining for two interceptions and two fumble recoveries while limiting Tampa Bay’s rushing attack to 72 yards.

QB Steven Swanson completed 16 of 25 passes for 149 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The running game was led by Shaun Kilpatrick, who totaled 89 rushing yards and added 32 receiving yards. Samuel Moon contributed 43 rushing yards and one receiving touchdown, while Brian Rafferty added 31 yards on the ground and one rushing touchdown. Wide receiver Brad Ventura matched teammate Kilpatrick’s 88 receiving yards and also scored a rushing touchdown.

The Patriots’ defense recorded two sacks and forced one fumble, recovering two for possession. Both teams went 0-for-0 on third-down conversions, highlighting a cautious approach in this first preseason matchup.

The Buccaneers’ Stan Page struggled with just 80 passing yards and one interception. Michael Watson was the offensive bright spot for Tampa Bay, racking up 88 receiving yards and a touchdown. Tight end Jonathan Tunney added 64 receiving yards.

Charles Reed’s squad exhibited efficient kicking with Reynolds converting all four field goal attempts. The Patriots committed slightly more penalties than the Buccaneers, with five penalties for 34 yards compared to three for 20 yards.

The preseason opener showed promising signs for the Patriots moving forward, with balanced offensive production and a strong defensive effort keeping them in control throughout the game.
