The Boston Patriots secured a 28-22 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in the 2046 Wild Card playoff opener held December 23 at home. The win advances the Patriots to the next round under head coach Charles Reed.

Boston struck early in the first quarter with a five-yard touchdown run by Shaun Kilpatrick, followed by a successful extra point from John Reynolds to make it 7-0. The Chargers responded with a 48-yard field goal from Brian Larson to cut the deficit to 7-3. However, the Patriots answered immediately as quarterback Fred Matthews connected with wide receiver Andrew Ramsey on a 75-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 14-3 after another Reynolds extra point.

The Patriots continued to dominate in the second quarter. Brian Rafferty added a 22-yard touchdown run, and Ramsey once again found the end zone on an 84-yard reception from Matthews. These scores, combined with successful extra points, brought Boston’s lead to 28-3. The Chargers countered with a quick special teams touchdown on a 110-yard kick return by Merlin Finch just before half, narrowing the gap to 28-10 after Larson’s extra point.

Los Angeles added a field goal early before regulation ended, bringing the final to 28-22 in favor of the Patriots. The Chargers made three field goals on the day.

Fred Matthews completed 17 of 37 passes for 281 yards and two touchdowns but threw two interceptions. Running back Shaun Kilpatrick rushed for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Andrew Ramsey stood out with 187 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Brian Rafferty contributed 80 rushing yards and a receiving touchdown.

The Patriots defense recorded two interceptions and forced a fumble recovered by linebacker Dwight Freeney. Boston recorded one sack and was penalized four times for 35 yards. The Chargers posted 204 passing yards, 73 rushing yards, and scored one rushing touchdown. Dennis Guilder completed 28 of 45 passes for 204 yards and one touchdown for Los Angeles, who committed five penalties for 43 yards.

The Patriots executed well on critical plays and maintained control for the majority of the game. Their balanced offensive attack and timely defensive takeaways proved decisive in this elimination Wild Card contest.
