The New England Patriots improved to 2-0 on the 2046 regular season after a 20-10 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday night. Playing on the road at SoFi Stadium, the Patriots controlled the game through strong defense and efficient offense under head coach Charles Reed.

Patriots quarterback Fred Matthews completed 20 of 31 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns despite throwing a pair of interceptions. Matthews connected on a key 21-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Larry Stewart in the second quarter, giving New England a 9-0 lead after John Reynolds' extra point. Stewart was the game’s offensive standout, rushing for two touchdowns and recording 177 receiving yards.

The Patriots took an early lead off a John Reynolds 37-yard field goal at 9:56 in the opening quarter. New England extended its advantage in the second quarter on the Matthews to Stewart touchdown. A missed Reynolds 45-yard field goal near the end of the half kept the score at 10-0.

Los Angeles Chargers starting quarterback Dennis Guilder struggled to find rhythm, completing 22 of 39 passes for only 145 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. Their lone score came in the third quarter when kicker Brian Larson converted a 56-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 10-3. However, a pivotal special teams play late in the third quarter saw Reynolds boot a 67-yard punt that Merlin Finch returned 102 yards for a Patriots touchdown. This play extended New England's lead to 13-3 before Larson’s extra point made it 13-10.

John Reynolds later added a 47-yard field goal for the Patriots in the third quarter, increasing their lead to 16-10.

Defensively, the Patriots forced three turnovers, including an interception off Chargers quarterback Dennis Guilder early in the first quarter by Dwight Freeney. Patriots linebacker James Looney added another interception late in the first quarter. The Patriots’ front seven pressured the Chargers effectively, registering three sacks and recovering a fumble. Both teams failed to convert on any third downs, with the Patriots going 0-for-0.

Rushing productivity also favored the Patriots, who rushed 32 times for 166 yards and two touchdowns, both scored by Larry Stewart. Chargers’ rushing gains were limited to 55 yards on 14 carries.

The victory moves the Patriots into sole possession of second place in the division with a 2-0 record, maintaining momentum early in the season. The Chargers fall to 1-1 and remain in second place in their division after losing at home.

Special teams played a significant role, particularly in the third quarter, as the Patriots’ punt return touchdown by Merlin Finch swung momentum decisively. Despite five penalties totaling 30 yards, the Patriots managed to control the tempo and preserve their lead until the final whistle.

Coach Charles Reed’s commitment to a balanced attack paid off as New England showcased a stout defense and effective special teams. The Patriots will look to maintain this level of play in week 3, buoyed by a convincing road performance against a divisional rival.
