The New England Patriots improved to 4-0 on the season with a 30-23 road victory against the Buffalo Bills on September 29. The contest, played at Buffalo's home field, saw Patriots head coach Charles Reed guide his team to a hard-fought win over George Keith's Bills, who fell to 1-3.
The scoring opened early with a 37-yard field goal from Patriots kicker John Reynolds less than a minute into the first quarter. The Bills responded quickly with a two-yard touchdown run from Mason Taylor and a successful extra point by Jose Pilcher to take a 7-3 lead. Pilcher later extended the lead with a 48-yard field goal as Buffalo led 10-3 at one point in the opening quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Patriots quarterback Steven Swanson connected with tight end James Valenzuela on an eight-yard touchdown pass to narrow the deficit to 10-9. Swanson continued to find success as he later threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Andrew Ramsey, giving the Patriots a 17-13 lead before halftime. Ramsey finished the game with 182 receiving yards and two rushing touchdowns, an impressive performance on multiple fronts.
The third quarter featured a pivotal special teams play when Patriots returner Michael Aldana returned a kickoff 105 yards for a touchdown, giving New England a 23-20 advantage. The return injured Bills' Richard Harrison, though he appeared to be able to return later. Kicker John Reynolds contributed with a perfect night on field goals, converting all three attempts.
The Patriots outpaced the Bills offensively, accumulating 289 passing yards on 20 completions by Swanson and 130 rushing yards on 33 carries. New England's defensive line, led by left defensive end Alfred Juliano, recorded three sacks and prevented Buffalo's offense from scoring any touchdowns despite 30 completions on 43 passing attempts by Bills quarterback Rafael Somerville.
Buffalo struggled to convert on third downs and in the red zone, with no touchdowns despite their field goals. The Patriots defense forced stops and limited Bills' rushing to 68 yards. The Bills made three field goals but failed to capitalize inside the red zone. Penalties were a factor for New England, committing six infractions for 39 yards.
The win maintains the Patriots' division-leading record at 2-0, extending a winning streak to four games to start the season. Buffalo remains near the bottom of the division at 0-1 with a continued three-game losing streak.
Patriots owner Martin Warnett remarked, "The kickoff return touchdown by Michael Aldana was a game-changer today. Plays like that energize the entire team and set the pace. Our balanced attack showed resilience on the road, and we're building momentum in the division."
Next week, the Patriots will look to continue their strong start with a home game, seeking to leverage the momentum gained on a challenging win in Buffalo.
