Usually experienced it when blitzing / being blitzed, QB picks up an outlet to dump the ball off to to beat the blitz?

Hot Reads...

These have been around since version 4.3, maybe 4.4. Basically, any time a team uses a blitz play more than 3 times in a game, the offense has a chance to recognize the blitz on the snap and throw a hot read. This was implemented to stop teams from overusing the Nickle CB3 Double LB blitz, which used to wreck every single offensive play in the game (no joke).

Any offense starts getting a bonus after the third time a blitz is used (the play has to have either the secondary or linebackers in "blitz" -- this is why the 3-4 Double WR2 can get called for a hot read and the 3-4 Cover 1 will NEVER be called for a hot read even though both plays have the SLB blitz). If the bonus results in the offensive play changing, it's called out in the play-by-play as a hot play.

The bonus applies in other ways. You will see that in the various flavors of over use text in the play-by-play. "The offense is getting familiar..." But base (non-blitz) defenses never get hit with either overuse or hot reads.

The issue in 4.6 is that hot read plays aren't always positive. Many offensive plays send the hot read play to the RB or FB who now stays in to block. I haven't actually done an analysis to see if hot plays are more or less beneficial now in 4.6.

In earlier versions of the game, a hot read was an almost guaranteed touchdown as the QB would find the uncovered receiver on most plays. And, even now, it's

Seem to recall reading that, good to know my memory is still intact.

I'm wondering if at times "hot reads" are occurring without the text proclaiming it. Granted, just visual "evidence", sometimes I get the feeling hot reads are occurring as obvious wide open receivers aren't even targeted; difficult to determine tho if hot read or QB inability to spot open guy.

But yeah, if a hot read is called when backs are in to pass block, usually things don't end well.

For me, it inadvertently leads to gameplanning issues.

Offensively, can't control what a defence calls against you. Keep backs in to pass block, runs risk of QB trying to dump it off to them means a loss of yards / incomplete. Don't keep backs in to block at times, higher chance of a sack.

For the reasons Seth gave, it's a good idea but the implementation needs work.
