Can you build a team through the draft in this game?
You have to use every aspect of roster building to build a championship team. Draft well, retain talent, free agency, trades and the waiver wire.
If you take over a perennially bad team, its possible to trade away some of your better talent to amass draft picks and build that way. The draft is sort of a **** shoot because players boom or bust in training camp and low volatility isnt a guarantee of success.
If you are attempting to rebuild through the draft, trading away some of your more talented players in their 4th or 5th year should net you some 1st and 2nds in return. Attempt to get quanity when it comes to draft picks for a rebuilt. For instance, taking a 2nd for a player may be good but getting a 3rd,4th and 5th may be better.
After you amass some picks, try to go low vol in rounds 1 and 2 and in the later rounds find talent with good general attributes and high vol in hopes of landing a player that booms. Obviously the more picks you obtain, the more chances you have to swing for a homerun.
With all that being said, you have to pay attention to the teams cap situation because trading away players under contract will leave you with dead cap and collecting 12 to 15 picks is pointless if you dont have the capspace to sign them all.
I would recommend using every avenue available to build your roster. Free agency can land you star players or fill wholes in your roster at a steep price. Trading away aging veterans for late round draft picks can make sense. Check the waiver wire every week and put bids in on any players that improve your roster.
In older leagues like this, it takes time to make wholesale changes so attempt to improve your team every season and have patience. Identify where you need to improve and focus on those areas.
Good luck....hope some of that makes sense
