Now that 1st half of the 1st round is over... I am going to put draft review (This is my perspective with some tidbit added to give fellow owner some things to talk - Intention is not to offend anyone )
1- 1 Packers John Elliot, RB Adams State - Overall grade A++
Positives - He is complete package to arrive in long time he is perfect blend of RB/WR who can do all and take over the game at any give point and change the outcome with one cut. He said to have high celling and great work ethics
Concerns - Not much except he has been from the small school so he needs to learn to be limelight and lead the packers.
He is worthy of 1-1 pick by Packers
-----------------------------
1 -2 Patriots S.Riely, WR Nebraska - Overall grade A
Positives - He is sure another high character tall and sleek guy who played at Div A with great success.. He has all speed, strength, courage, route running and all other attribute that can make him premier WR in the league
Concerns - Not much except he will have to learn to stay patience as Patriots rebuild and eventually pair him with the QB who can throw him deep.
He is good pickup by Pats and if paired with right QB he can be the anchor for that offense
--------------------
1-3 Bucs (we have draft day trade as Texans GM smarty able to get impulsive Bucs GM to make trade to move 2 spots)
Roberto Reed, S Miami. -- Overall Grade A
Positive - He is perfect Safety as there can be... speed, acceleration, strength, tackle, punish the receivers and coverage skills all there and he has displayed them successful at major program leading their defense so he has all intangible needed to succeed at the next level.
Concerns - He will have to learn to be just contribute in crowded secondary of Bucs ... which will need some adjustment on his part so its will be good to see if can adopt from being the Guy to one of the guys in the stellar defense......this is was not need but luxury pick for Bucs
Overall was Top 5 players in draft so good pick up just feel that Bucs jumped the gun cold have drafted him at #4 or #5 but its always good to secure if you fall in love with player and Bucs clearly did.
-----------------
1-4 Bucs Robby Schaeffer, OG Auburn Overall grade A-
Positive - He is complete OL strength, intelligence, speed, blocking and above all his willingness to play special teams shows his high character - he is true player and in real NFL would be 1-1 pick. He played well with top level competition so he should not have hard time transition to NFL.
Concerns - OL in Top 5 is luxury special with Stewart on board. He just need to learn to be the man on the run first team.
Bucs could have picked Stewart but given their secondary is loaded and they drafted Roberto it make sense for them to pick up talented OL anchor with the pick
--------------------------------
1-5 Texans Larry Stewart, CB Northwestern overall grade A
Positive - He played Safety in college but will be switched to play outside corner... so it will be interesting transition but he is always up for challenge and have proven doubters wrong whole his college life so this is not a new challenge for him. specially given proven coaching staff of
Texans he should flourish in no time.
Concerns - Lack of height and speed but has proven doubter wrong so hope he can continue the trend.
Great pick up to shore the Defense by new Texans management specially getting their original choice even after pulling trade down Bucs to gain additional pick this year.
------------------
1-6 Browns - S.Castleman, RB Washington Overall grade A-
Positives - Great speed and acceleration along with strength and other needed attribute. He is proven college leader but always stayed out of limelight as played in Pacific timezone.
Concerns - He is bit tall for RB so need to watch for the center of gravity in NFL but if he can get the right OL to protect him he can be monster.
Great pick up at the key position for the run first team who can actually catch and go distance too.
----------
1-7 JAX O. Crounch, LT Overall grade A
Positive - He is true LT which are rare in NFL....good strength and other needed attribute plus playing at Michigan has got him almost ready for NFL.
Concerns - Not much except he may have to adjust to NFL speed so will have some grown pains but has desire to succeed and team that will use him right way.
They say have patience and good things will happen ....well for JAX that was the case as the TOP 5 talent just fall in their lap, plus he fits their style so its right match both ways.
----------
1-8 Chargers Brent Plummer, DL Penn State Overall Grade B+
Positive - He is well balanced DL who has played at the major program. He never takes the playoff and its all hustle guy and has been over achiever all his career.
Concerns - He has played in great Defense and has been overachiever with great strength but average speed so dont expect many sacks but he will be great overall with combination of sacks, run def and pass defense.
Good pickup by Chargers to shore up their D-Line Brent is more of LDE than RDE and would have longer and successful career as the LDE.
-----------------
1-9 Cowboys P.Twiggs LB Missouri Overall grade B+
Positive - He is complete LB and extremely successful and competitive in nature... he played at Missouri giving him chance to lead the Defense making him shine as the player and also as the captain of the Defense
Concerns - While he is leader and will lead he tends to take some playoff and have chip on the shoulder... plus he does not play special team so it will put pressure on him to succeed at the LB .
Good pick up of the talented player who is bit heady and if molded right can be great tweener who can cover as the LB and Pass Rush at will from the LDE position.
------------
1-10 Colts Eugene Cards,SS Florida Overall grade B+
Positive- He is true safety with great success at the major program...while he is not great physically or have above average speed he is true football player with great stats to prove his worth.
Concerns - He has to continue his journey as the overachiever in the NFL as his physical trait will not allow him to be successful so he has to continue to play his heart out to be successful at the next level.
He was non flashy pick up by Colts and bit of reach too but overall good no-nonsense football player who will contribute positively for Colts Defense.
----------
1-11 (One more huge and old trade and Bucs are on board again)
W.Francis, QB Miami - Overall Grade D / A
Positive - He is heady player in the mold of Brettt Favre who will let his instinct take over the game and he plays his heart out but also have hard time fitting any particular system as he tends to call his own offense once his instinct take over. He is QB who will make spectacular plays for fans but will be nightmare for coaching staff
Concerns - He has been heady and have been bit of loose cannon with tendency to go off scripts plus he has let the stardom get into his head so it will be interesting transition to NFL.
This is bit of the head scratcher move by Bucs GM to pull bold trade to get the QB when they are loaded at the position while it shows them that they like him and wanted him as Bucs which is good ego booster for Francis but same time unless they commit to Francis and build around him this can be long and rocky marriage so it will be interesting to watch this development. Even if this works out it will be dangerous move on the Bucs GM but then again he has been known to pull this moves time and time again.
-----------------
1-12 Seahawks - Robert Reinick , LB Miami - Overall grade B+
Positive - Speedy LB with good coverage skills and decent attributes...has been part of successful Miami program in college so has been seasoned and ready for NFL. He is high character guy with desire to play his heart out.
Concerns - He relies lot on speed which has affected his development as the overall LB so will need right coaching to develop his overall game
Good pick up from proven program who can contribute right away the improve Seahawks defense.
-----------
1-13 Eagles B.Nobles RB/WR Overall Grade B+
Positive - Speedy back with good acceleration and strength to shed some blocks plus one cut and he is gone for TD player. He has great college career and has been steady riser with right football attitude and ethics
Concerns - He is been speedy burner and has been successful he has had fumble issue in college so will need to protect ball better in NFL and also need to work on running route and willing to catch the short pass in traffic.
Great pick up by Eagles... they can really build the offense around him. He needs to work on some part of his game but with right coaching he can be fierce Eagle for ages.
---------
1-14 Bears C. Wetherington, TE New Hampshire Overall Grade B +
Positive - He tall and built traditional TE with great success at the college level. He is high character guy who can be face of franchise for long time.
Concerns - He has been successful but against the lower competition as he played at New Hampshire ..... so will need right coaching and time to adjust to NFL
Great pick up who will be cornerstone for Bears if given time to develop behind their TE.
-----------
1-15 Saints A.Chin, QB Oregan State Overall grade B
Positive - He is total opposite of W.Francis in character but produced similar successful college career and have chance to continue that in NFL . He has good intelligence and arm strength and field vision.
Concerns - He is bit unknown as being pegged as the quite leader so will need to see how that translate into his game as he lead Saints to the next level in NFL.
Great pickup by rising Saints team and he can make the difference to lead them to playoff and beyond. If he and francis both have good camp than can build rivalry for ages in NFC South.
-------
1-16 Steelers J.Dunn WR Overall Grade A
Positive - He has speed, acceleration, strength, decent hand, courage and route running ability. He has been great at creating separation in college and had good success even with average QB play at California. Once he catches the ball in separation he is homerun threat
Concerns - He has been playing with average QB and that has taken toll on his mindset. He as tendency to take plays off when not interested, so it will be something to watch for as he develop his game in NFL.
This seems to have become tradition for Steeler to annually find great WR in the middle of the 1st round year after year so one more great find by sold Steelers management.
I will work on the 2nd half of 1st round later once 1st round ends but please review and give me your view or smack talk.
It does take effort so lets make it live comments and not just thumbs up
