coach salary management

Managing coaching salaries is difficult in the current UI. It's made even more difficult because you can't just out and out release a coach the way you can a player, and you can't temporarily go over your cap the way you can when managing the player roster.

Hiring coaches is like dominoes. I need to give my HC a raise so I can get a good coordinator. I have to hope I get the coordinators signed on the first pass so that I can make decent offers to position coaches.

And after structuring all those offers, I'm $2M over my budget according to the widget. Can I clear that space by cutting a bad coach or coach at a less important spot? No...I have to offer another coach that job at a low enough rate so that I can replace the more expensive coach to clear cap room. But if that low offer isn't accepted at the same time as the rest of offers, the dominoes don't fall correctly and my plans fall apart. (Or, and I just thought of this, what if the order that offers are processed in the stage matters...if the cheaper coach hasn't signed by the time an offer would send me over, do I lose the more important coach since I don't have room?!?)

This could all be dramatically simplified if either:
a) I could simply release a coach and be guaranteed to free up his cap space to be used elsewhere, or
b) Just like with the player salary cap I could temporarily go over budget until a future sim stage...maybe only allow it during early free agency.

This is how I understand it. So correct me if I'm wrong.

Coaches and players contracts are handled differently in RL.

Coaches don't have a salary cap. Players do.
The money you have for coaches isn't cap money. It's how much your organization has in it's wallet to spend. Can't spend what you don't have sort of speak.

Coaches contracts are guaranteed(promised).
With players, only their bonus money is guaranteed(promised).

With released players you lose your cap space for the amount of bonus owed. And since the base pay is not guaranteed it is wiped away and cap space is cleared. With coaches there is no bonus money or base money. It's just money. Nothing to clear.

So with coaches your never clearing off cap space like you do with players. Your just paying him the money you promised him to go away. What ever you have left in your wallet is what you have to spend on your next promise.

If I have something wrong or missed anything please chime in.
I dont want to mislead anyone.

For me, I think the biggest problem I have with coach hiring is the timing of it all.

Just to kick around:

FA Stages 1 thru 4:
Only for hiring Head Coaches.
After that you may only hire unemployed HC's.

Stages 5 thru Draft Day 3:
Only for hiring Coordinators.
After that you may only hire unemployed Coordinators

Stages Draft Day 4 and beyond:
Now that all the poaching is done we can bid on the Position Coaches and other unfilled spots from the unemployed line.

IMHO outside of HC, OC and DC the whole hiring and firing thing is a great big pain in the unnecessary ***

Really the timing of the hiring coaches wouldn't be a problem if you could send multiple coach contracts from Head Coach to Kicker
here somewhat of a idea that would work but it would need to expand to the Head Coach , the OC and the DC = https://mfn7.myfootballnow.com/community/thread/5/1824?page=1#11326

also if we couldn't get coaches until draft day 4 then people would see that nuisance of " you don't have a full coaching staff " yet I would think would cause problems because people would complain about seeing that message until Draft day 4.

I think if hiring of staff went the way of your idea then that message needs to go away where people don't see it either for good or they can keep it hidden like they can for scores.

I still have to say if anything need to change for coaches it should be we should send many offers so we can get a coaching staff full before the draft.

That is usually what I do is I try to get the coaching staff full so I don't have to see that message during the draft.
