Depth Chart For Preseason

By Rumplebeanskin

When setting my depth chart for preseason games, is it best to leave my starters as #1, as they will only play a few series then be benched, or should I promote young players I want to see in games to the top of their chart so they play more?

Thanks!

Best to leave your starters at the top of your depth chart, this is important because they will still need to improve their conditioning.

Whichever you prefer.

You determine how much your starters play in the Misc Options section in your gameplan.

So, you could have your starters play 3 quarters, and put your rookies at #1.
Or, you could have your starters play 1 quarter, and put your rookies as backups.

In both of those scenarios, your rookies will play more.
The only difference would be that while your #1s are playing, your backups may also get into the game a little due to fatigue of your #1 players.

This. I use a combination of depth chart setting and pulling starters. I usually play my starters in their normal positions for two quarters in preseason games 1 and 2. Then I start pulling my veteran starters out of the depth chart completely, or playing them in different positions if they are slash players, and play my starters for three quarters in games 3 and 4. By game 4, I have mostly second team players starting and mostly third string, cut candidate players playing primary backup roles.

Does this apply to special teams? I only select 10 for gunner, rushers etc. More specifically, I've got 2 punters this off season. Do they rotate like every other position?

Rumple..a few tips.

Remember to have 60 players on your roster during Pre-Season as ALL 60 are Active and can play.

Have your depth Charts full with similar players in similar positions ie back up G`s in G,T & C slots.

Remember, for example, if you only have 6 WR`s on your team in Pre-Season,once your starters are pulled from the game,If you call a 5WR Formation, who`s gonna be the 5th WR?

All excellent tips, thank you for those. I have more than 60 at the moment so I'll need to trim that down, but good to know I can keep 60 to take a look at and all of them can be active.

Can anyone confirm what "starters" are? Specifically for WR and CB. Every position is pretty much a starter at the top of the depth chart so simple enough, but you have more than 1 WR and CB on the field. Is it your top 2 or top 3 WRs and CBs that are considered "starters" and will be benched.

Also, I have 2 punters, and want them both to play. Will they rotate if I put them at 1 and 2 on the depth chart?

Thanks!

The player in the #1 spot of each position (#1 and #2 for WR and CB) will be benched as long as you have enough depth to fill once he's benched, which is a minimum of 2 players for most positions (I think to sit your punter you need a 3rd player in the chart, I'm not 100% sure on that though so you could try it and see what it does)

For WRs and CBs I'd assume the "starters" would be how ever many guys you need for the given formation.
